Empire of the Sun creates art of a different kind with the new BMW Z4

Inspired by the aesthetic appeal of the new BMW Z4, Empire of the Sun has re-recorded “The Art of Driving”, a dreamy, romantic track full of driving metaphors for the launch. The unique, electro-pop take on Blackbox Recorder’s “The Art of Driving”, will be heard on the new TVC directed by Jake Scott in May and will be released commercially by EMI in June as a b-side to an upcoming single from the album, “Walking On A Dream”.

The track features Luke Steele and his wife Jodi Steele on vocals.

Luke said “I loved the track, and it was exciting to be able to give it the Empire of the Sun treatment. I am a fan of Robin Rhode and to be part of this project for the launch of the BMW Z4 was a real thrill. It was great working with Jodi and now we are talking about doing other projects. I think people will like the track’s lush melodies and fantasy laden lyrics, make of them what you will!

Using the new BMW Z4 to bring his idea to life, South African artist Robin Rhode conceived an artistic idea to communicate the power and adventure in the creation of art. The artwork developed for the TVC sees brush strokes formed by the treads of the BMW’s Z4 tires on a canvas nearly the size of a football field. The artwork appears dynamic and spontaneous, as if created in moment.

Tom Noble, General Manager of Marketing, BMW Group Australia said, “BMW is very excited to be aligned with Australian success, Empire of the Sun, for the launch of the BMW Z4. The alignment with the group enables BMW to continue to lead the way in innovation and forward thinking in the luxury car market“.

The Art of Driving builds on BMW’s historical association with art, including the BMW Art Car Collection, which dates back to 1975, when BMW commissioned artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein to give cars an untraditional paint job.

BMW’s creative association also spans into the music sphere, with the Empire of the Sun collaboration following BMW’s emergence into the brand entertainment space in 2006. Past collaborations include the likes of BodyRockers, Moloko and last year with The Presets for the launch of the BMW 1 Series.

  3. This is good promo guys, congratulations! Though I'm not impressed by BMW's cars, but that's not the point here ;-) The song has a wonderful sound and that being combined with Luke's and Jodi's vocals makes it a drive through a dreamworld. I love it, well done!

Pretty cool ad I must admit. Say "The Aaaart of Driiiiiving" with a sassy Brit accent (even though Jodi is from Perth??) In a complete coincidence, the Z4 has been my fave car for a long while. Regardless of engineering, but it's so damn pretty!
